What other video game for teenagers from the 90's (or any time, really) has you shooting literal pig cops? One of the expansion levels has him saying "Now this is my kind of party!" when stumbling upon a dominatrix's den. Just wanna throw this out there: our current chunk of history right now is in need of a silly wise-cracking "hero" from simpler times to make sense of a darker setting than what we're used to, and Duke still has a ton of fans who want to see the smarter sides of this character done right.įor every obscure expansion pack that had him blasting away mutant-elf-feministas or whatever, there's still the fact that the more popular well-known base game had Duke blasting away pig cops in a piece of mainstream entertainment made during the backdrop of the Rodney King riots. They rear into action and resume their resistance, the classic heavy metal Megadeath version of the Duke theme rips into motion, switching us back to Duke's perspective for the cathartic final act. Just when all hope is lost, a voice cracks over the loudspeakers:įollowed by gunshots and the screeching of dying aliens. With their hero slain, humanity's just about to give up and submit to the nihilism that would finally let the aliens break through and exterminate humanity's last survivors. Dark lighting, quiet silence, locked doors and filthy trash eventually lead us to an underground subway tunnel crowded with civilian refugees. The tone is full-blown atmospheric horror, whatever the game would've been without Duke there lightening things up with his cheesy comic relief. The camera switches perspectives to a different character playing a quiet, creepy, slower-paced survival horror level.

Imagine: after 12 hours of weird cognitively dissonant comedy-horror juxtaposed against Duke's cheesy-ass action movie lines, we play a section where he's finally overrun and presumed to be killed. With some clever writing completing the story, that dissonance could be used to the story's advantage. Duke sticks out of the setting like a sore thumb, but it seems intentional. What's interesting is that the tone of the 2001 version of DNF is noticeably darker than all the other games. The situation he's in now is partly because Gearbox did a considerable downgrade to the character over how he was portrayed in the 90's.
